Medical Guardian Review

Website: MedicalGuardian.com

As our parents and grandparents grow old, we are often faced with making a very important decision – Will we let them grow old in place, hire an in-home caregiver, or let a nursing home take care of them? There’s an obvious risk in letting them grow in place, like a fall or other sudden medical emergency, or in the event of fire, who will take care of them? But if we ask our elderly, most of them would prefer to stay in place and grow old in their homes. That is where a medical alert system like Medical Guardian comes in.

General Overview

History

Geoff Gross was an ordinary man, driven by a dream, passion, and willingness to help his grandmother who experienced the problems of growing old in her home. From then on he decided to take matters into his own hands and solve the problem at hand. From his apartment, Medical Guardian started, where he personally called thousands of thousands of aging seniors or their adult children, listened to their concerns, and shared what he experienced himself. With his own personal knowledge and the insight he got from the people he called, he developed systems to help them and made his first 2,500 sales on his own.

Over the years, Geoff has been able to make the business grow into one of the top-ranked medical alert device companies in the market. And what they’ve learned over the years is that the key to success is putting their clients’ concerns first.

Medical Guardian’s corporate headquarters is located in Philadelphia, PA and they service all 50 states.

Reputation

Medical Guardian is known to be one of the fastest growing medical alert companies, and partly, it’s because of their good customer service. They have 911 trained customer service representatives that are highly qualified to respond to medical emergencies and send help when needed.

They have also developed a good reputation because they do not require customers to sign up for long term contracts. They also have no activation or cancellation fees.

Alert Systems Equipment and Services Offered

Medical Guardian offers 4 different products to meet the needs of nearly every senior.

Classic Guardian, Home Guardian, and Mobile Guardian all come with either a wrist pendant or neck pendant that includes an emergency alert button. They also have add-ons that we’ll discuss.

The Premium Guardian comes with a charging station and a belt clip that works pretty much like the wrist and neck pendant.

All of Medical Guardian’s alert pendants are water resistant.

Classic Guardian

Of the 4 packages, this is the cheapest. Yet, it still offers a really good service for customers. The Classic Guardian is for seniors who mostly prefer to stay around the house.

Features

This package comes with a base unit which is connected to a telephone line and equipped with a hands-free speaker, reset button for when in case there is a false alarm, and indicators if there’s a problem with either your device or signal. In the middle of the base unit is a large “Emergency Call” button. Of course, the base unit has to be connected to a power outlet, but in case of power outage it has a backup battery that can run for 32 hours.

The package also gives you a necklace or wristband pendant that works in conjunction with the base product which, when pressed, contacts a customer service representative to give you assistance. The range from which the pendant can connect to the base unit is limited, but not short. It can reach you in a 1,300 sq ft. Which is pretty good by industry standards, so even if you’re in a garden or taking a short walk outside, you can still use it.

Emergency contact persons are also stored in your base unit so you can call them right away if you need them or the customer service can do that for you.

Installation

The installation is pretty simple and it consists of simply plugging in the base unit, connecting it with a telephone line and the phone jack. The products comes with an installation guide so that anyone can successfully install it.

Home Guardian

The Home Guardian is an upgrade of the Classic Guardian that also offers medical assistance for customers wirelessly, which means no more connecting to a telephone line. This is Medical Guardian’s most popular package as well.

Features

The Home Guardian package comes with a sleek, intuitive base unit. The base unit is, unlike the Classic Guardian, wireless and it uses a connection to the AT&T cellular network. As an upgrade, the base unit now has a “Test” button which will blink yellow each month to remind you to test your device, ensuring that you are safe and protected when you need it most. It also has an LED screen which displays the time and current weather. The display also shows the signal strength and battery life.

This package also comes with a wireless neck or wrist pendant with a more flashy look compared to Classic Guardian’s pendant. The pendant and the base unit of Home Guardian pretty much works like the Classic Guardian’s, but it has shorter range, which only reaches a maximum of 600 sq ft.

Installation

Installation is simple. Since the base unit is connected wirelessly, you won’t have to connect it to a telephone line. With the package comes a detailed installation guide.

Mobile Guardian

The Mobile Guardian provides all the safety and security of the Classic and Home Guardians, but can be taken with you anytime anywhere.

Features

Mobile Guardian comes with a base unit that is small and portable, in fact it fits exactly in the palm of your hands. The base unit can work just like the other guardians inside the home, where you can put it in its base. But should you ever want to go out or if you still have an active lifestyle and you are always on the go, you can take the base unit with you, put in your pocket, or in the provided leather carrying case. It has a large “Emergency” button at the middle of its body to give you easy access to medical help. The base unit is specially designed to be on-the-go as it has a battery life of up to 24 hours.

Just like the other products, Mobile Guardian comes with its own neck or wrist pendant that also functions like the other pendants. The range is shorter however, 350 sq ft., but that is because the base unit can be taken with you. The pendant is also GPS enabled so the customer service will know exactly where you are as soon as you make the call and they can send you help wherever you are.

Installation

The Mobile Guardian is probably the easiest to install. It requires no wires, just connecting it to a cellular service. For a detailed installation, please see the installation manual that comes with the product.

Premium Guardian

The Premium Guardian according to Medical Guardian, “Is the most technologically advanced medical alert device on the market today”. Aside from its mobility and portability, it also has an upgrade which includes automatic fall detection.

Features

The Premium Guardian comes with a base unit and its charging station. The base unit has an “Emergency” button that accesses a connection with a customer support when pressed. Just like the Mobile Guardian, the base unit can come with you wherever you go and it has 36 hours of battery life. It is wireless and GPS enabled, and uses a cellular connection through the AT&T network.

The package also includes a pendant that can either be clipped on the belt or as a pendant around the neck. The added feature of this pendant is that it detects a fall automatically, so this is not just for elderly users. It is also useful for users with Diabetes, Epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease or Stroke. Because it senses a fall automatically, in case the patient fell and was knocked unconscious or unable to move and press the emergency button in the pendant, help is still expected to come. Since the pendant is GPS enabled, it knows where the fall or any emergency happened and Medical Guardian can send you help wherever you are.

Installation

Since it is wireless and connects only through a cellular network, installation should be easy. The package also comes with a detailed installation guide that will guide you through the process.

Extra’s and Upgrades

Medical Guardian offers a few upgrades and extras for their products.

Wall Mounted Button

The Wall Mounted Button is an add-on to the Classic Guardian. The Wall Mounted Button has an emergency button that when pressed will alert Medical Guardian’s customer support.

Automatic Fall Detection Pendant

The Automatic Fall Detection Pendant is an available add-on for home guardian. It is also a part of the Premium Guardian package.

How Are Alerts Handled?

Medical Guardian has 911 trained customer service representatives who were trained to handle emergencies and send help. But how exactly do they handle an emergency?

Calling For Help

To get connected with an emergency respondent simply press the alert button on your pendant or wristband. Of course, there are other options for connecting with customer support like by pressing the “Emergency” button in the Wall Mounted Button or if the Fall Detection Pendant detected a fall.

Assessing the Situation

Once connected to an emergency respondent, they will assess your situation by asking a few questions. To give you a better service, they have your medical records, medication, preferred doctors, and contact number of friends and relatives. They will determine what kind of help you need and it will be sent to you immediately.

If in case you didn’t respond to their questions because you are unable to speak or are unconscious, an ambulance will immediately be sent to you. They will use the GPS capability of your pendant to know exactly where you are. Family members will also be informed.

Sending the Help You Need

The respondents can send you an ambulance, the police and fire department, a friend, neighbor, or your family. Since the situation has been assessed well, you don’t have to worry that an ambulance is sent to you every time you press the “Emergency” button. For instance, if you just need the help of a relative they can call your relative for you. But if they feel that the situation is an emergency, they will send the appropriate help. If in case you were taken to the hospital, they will also inform your relatives and emergency contacts so that they can assist you personally.
