LifeShield Security Review

Our Rating 3.0

If you want home security without upfront cost, you should cautiously consider LifeShield, a DIRECTV company. LifeShield has historically struggled with customer service. They held an F rating with the BBB for at least 5 out of 12 months in 2014 but they have shed some tactics that might have landed them in that situation in the first place. For example, when we first reviewed LifeShield, they heavily pushed a long 60 month contract, but now they seem content with a 36 month commitment. They’ve also created clearer pricing strategies, kept in place their practice of leasing equipment, and even improved their mobile app. On the downside, they still don’t have a home automation offer, they employee an auto-renew policy, and they are still haunted by customer care grumbles.

What is included in the monthly fee for LifeShield Security?

LifeShield is unique in that they offer three forms of communication. They primarily use Broadband, but can also offer cellular or can communicate using your home’s phone line. They call this 3x protection. They’ve added extra redundancy through battery backup so that your system will stay up and running even if the power is out.

Sticking with the power of three, LifeShield has three different packages. They all offer the same potential for service but the difference is the included equipment.

LifeShield’s entry level package is called Security Essentials. They offer Essentials to customers with a 36 month contract for $39.99 per month (or less with DIRECTV) plus a one-time activation fee. When we secret shopped LifeShield, the activation fee was $99 but we’ve been told that this fee varies based upon credit rating. With a 36 month contract, qualifying homeowners will receive an equipment package worth around $527.72. Essentials includes burglary/theft monitoring and access to their free mobile app.

The remaining packages are Security Advantage and Security Professional. They cost $49.99 and $59.99.

When comparing these packages, you will notice that LifeShield has two flavors of video monitoring: basic and advanced. Both basic and advanced offer the ability to view live video, take pictures, and set triggers. The major difference between the two is storage. The basic video that comes with the Security Advantage package offers 250MB of storage, and the advanced video in Security Professional includes 1 GB of storage. Beyond setting up event related video recording, LifeShield does not offer any home automation features such as light or temperature control. LifeShield is looking into integration with Z-Wave in the future.

Discounts for DirecTV and LifeShield Serivce

LifeShield offers monthly discounts to those with DIRECTV service. If you qualify, you can get an extra $10 per month off of your monthly fee. In general, the offer requires that you sign a 36 month contract, sign up for bill auto pay, and that you are a new and approved customer. Of course, this also requires that you have and keep DIRECTV service.

What Sets LifeShield Apart?

1. LifeShield offers leased equipment which means no or low upfront equipment fee.

2. They use a Dual Defense System. Dual defense is the use of a keypad and a base. If one of the systems is smashed, the other base will pick up the signal and call for help. A bad guy would have to find and destroy both pieces of equipment before a call went out to truly disable the system. This would be very difficult to do if you keep the equipment separated.

3. LifeShield is pretty fast. They send a signal within 1 second via a broadband internet connection.

4. They give you options. You can choose to have your system communicate via broadband or cellular.

LifeShield’s Mobile App

All of LifeShield’s plans give you access to the LifeShield Mobile App, which includes email and text alerts. Through the mobile app or the LifeShield website, you can arm and disarm your alarm and also customize your alarm. The LifeShield Mobile App started off rocky, but customers state that it is getting better and better with each release. In fact, LifeShield has a 3.5 star rating on iTunes and 3.6 on Google Play.

Cost to Lease LifeShield Equipment

LifeShield does force the three basic equipment packages that are tied to the different plans, but you can add equipment to each package as needed for an additional cost. Keep in mind that this is the cost to lease equipment and this fee needs to be paid upfront and cannot be spread out over the life of the contract.

Leasing Extra Equipment for Communication

They offer multiple arm and disarm options, like the keychain remote ($29.99) and the security touchpad.

Leasing Extra Sensor Style Equipment

Though LifeShield offers one Fire Safety Sensor at no additional cost in every package, you can lease an additional sensor for $49.99. The wireless Fire Safety Sensor monitors your existing smoke and fire alarms. If it senses an alarm sound, it will send an alert to LifeShield’s monitoring center.

In addition to the Fire Safety Sensor, LifeShield offers a wireless freeze sensor, flood sensor, motion detector, glass break sensor, and door/window sensors.

Leasing Extra Video Surveillance Gear

LifeShield offers an outdoor and an indoor security camera. Neither camera is capable of panning or tilting, but they both give you the ability to view footage in real-time. LifeShield requires that you use one of their two camera options. You cannot monitor your existing IP cameras via LifeShield.

It’s important to note that broadband is required for IP cameras. If you have the cellular primary monitoring option, it will not support video service.

The cost to lease an extra indoor camera is $139.99 and an outdoor camera is $159.99.

A Summary of Things to Think About

  • Technical support is delivered via remote access. This is ideal as it lowers costs, keeps strangers out of your home, and can be delivered without an appointment. In addition to remote support, they also have plenty of documents available online to help you troubleshoot on your own.
  • LifeShield uses broadband internet, but you can use an analog phone or a cellular module for back-up.
  • LifeShield offers battery backup for their equipment pieces.
  • LifeShield is a DIY company but they also offer installation services in select markets.
  • Though their actual return policy may vary based upon the situation, a general rule of thumb is a meager 7 days policy. This really isn’t enough time to live with the system.
  • Compared to other top companies, they are not very responsive on Social Media. I fear this may be a hint toward customer service in general as their BBB has ranged from a B+ to a C+ to an F over the past couple years.
  • LifeShield has an auto renew policy.
  • LifeShield does not currently offer Home Automation.
  • All LifeShield equipment is leased and must be returned at the end of your agreement.
