Belkin Netcam vs Samsung SmartCam HD Pro vs Dropcam Pro

We’ve reviewed the Dropcam plenty of times before and as much as we worry about overexposure it seems like Dropcam is still one hot little number. One of our readers recently asked us to compare the Dropcam to the Belkin Netcam and I felt this was worthy of a full review.

When using an IP camera for home security there are so many different areas that you can compare. It’s important to look into encryption, data security, and also the cost to protect your total home. While traditional self monitored systems keep the cost low by selling $29 open/close sensors, an IP camera can only cover a certain range depending upon the lens angle or the camera’s ability to pan and tilt combined with the quality of built-in motion detectors. With that said, we’ve decided to help you take a closer look at three IP cameras on the market today including the Belkin Netcam, the Samsung SmartCam HD Pro, and the Dropcam Pro. We’ve previously compared Dropcam to other IP cameras so be sure to take a look at the related articles below to see if we’ve compared to the camera you are considering.

Belkin Netcam

Pros: The Belkin Netcam integrates with the Belkin WeMo which makes it an interesting option for home security and automation. Basically the two work together to create triggers and alerts. For example, if the Netcam senses motion at the back door, WeMo can turn on a lamp.

Cons: The downside is that the software is kind of crappy. What’s the point of having home automation and an awesome IP camera if you can’t control anything? The iOS App is rated a pitiful 1.5 Stars on iTunes and though the same app is rated 3.7 stars on Google Play, 225 Android users have rated the app 1 star. Not good. Also, their Cloud storage option is still in Beta mode. While I was told I would get a 30 day Cloud trial with my camera purchase, they couldn’t tell me what the cost would be after 30 days and admitted that Beta means no encryption.

Samsung SmartCam HD Pro

Pros: Samsung has a feature called Motion Zone Select. Motion Zone Select provides greater control over the monitored area. For example, let’s say that you want to monitor a door that is right by a busy hall. You would simply draw a box around the door to tell the camera to only alert if motion is detected within the box. You can select up to three motion zones within the camera’s view.

Cons: It seems like users have mixed feelings about this camera. The most common complaint is that the camera “logs out” on occasion rendering it useless as a home security device.

Dropcam Pro

Pros: Though Dropcam has cancelled their Tab concept, the partnership with Google subsidiary Nest is bound to bring more innovation to this product. I still have my fingers crossed for another open/close sensor idea or even integration with Nest. Also, due to Dropcam’s popularity it works well with other home automation hubs like SmartThings.

Cons: The motion detection doesn’t work well and the camera has some lag time issues as we experienced in our test.

* Belkin Cloud+ Premium features are initially being launched as a free public beta. After the initial beta period a monthly subscription fee will apply. However, during a long secret shopper call with Belkin they said that monthly pricing is not available to the public yet and that Beta means they do not have the transmission protected by encryption.

**My sales rep told me that there is a way to setup video to go directly to my phone’s photo gallery. From what I understand, it is a manual record not motion based. Basically when viewing live streaming footage, you manually press the record button to record to your phone’s gallery.
