Digital Life by AT&T Review

Our Rating 4.0

AT&T is one of many “triple play” providers dipping a toe into home security waters. They’ve branded their offer “Digital Life” with a heavy emphasis on home automation.

What is the lowest cost package for AT&T’s Digital Life?

AT&T’s Digital Life baseline package is called “Smart Security”. They offer the package for $39.99 per month. With Smart Security, customers gain access to 24/7 home security monitoring (UL Listed), 24 hour battery backup, smart phone access, and professional installation. The package also includes equipment – which we will get into below.

AT&T’s next package is Smart Security & Automation. It is offered at $54.99 per month. This monitoring plan offers everything that Smart offers, plus the option to view live or recorded video and the option to remotely lock or unlock your doors.

Finally, Digital Life has a plan called Premium Security & Automation. This plan has everything offered in the previous plan, plus the option to manage your home’s temperature, control small appliances, and detect moisture. The monthly charge is $64.99.

All packages provide access to Digital Life’s proprietary app, but what you can do with the app depends upon the equipment that you own.

The app controls security alerts and all home automation features. It is vital to the performance of the system and yet it under delivers. For the past year, the app sat between a 1 and a 2 star rating on iTunes. It is currently rated 2.5 stars on
iTunes
and 3.8 stars on Google Play.

What equipment do you get with Digital Life?

Each package comes with equipment for a small fee based upon credit approval. If you want more equipment, you can always add more as needed.

What is a keypad vs what is a touchscreen?

Basically, the difference between a keypad and a touchscreen is a non-touchscreen vs touchscreen controller.

What is a door lock pushbutton?

This is what Digital Life calls their smart lock. They use a keypad style Yale smart lock for home automation.

Want More Home Automation? Add It With Digital Life

Though some of Digital Life’s home security packages include smart home services, you can also add service a-la-carte. Each add-on requires an additional monthly fee and an additional equipment purchase.

Their first optional add-on package is the Video Camera Package. This package will add $9.99 per month plus a one-time $99.99 equipment fee. This package will allow you to view live or recorded video for your smart device. You can purchase additional outdoor or indoor cameras à la carte. To learn more about AT&T’s video package, check out our coverage of their home security cameras.

The second add-on package is the Door Package. With this package you can remotely lock and unlock the front door or a garage door. Digital Life makes it easy for you to give temporary access, as needed, to your home by allowing you to use the app to program multiple access codes for keyless entry. This package also adds the ability for you to setup alerts on your phone to let you know when your doors are opened, who opened them, and what time the door is closed. This package is an extra $4.99 per month plus the cost of any needed equipment. Their garage door controller is $49.99, a pushbutton door lock is $99.99, and the touchscreen door lock is $149.99.

Digital Life’s Energy Package is also $4.99 per month. With the energy package, you can adjust your home’s temperature from your smart device. You can also control lights or small appliances to help lower your home’s energy consumption. For $199.99, you can purchase one light switch control, one indoor smart plug, and one thermostat.

Next, Digital Life offers Water Detection. This is what other security companies might call flood control. This package is an extra $4.99 per month plus a one-time equipment fee of $49.99. It includes three temperature and water sensors.

In addition to water detection, there’s an add-on called the Water Control package. Not to be confused with Water Detection, Water Control takes flood monitoring a step further. Where Water Detection can tell you there is a problem, Water Control can help you take care of the problem. For $9.99 per month plus a one-time fee of $249.99, you get one water controller and three temperature and water sensors. This is the same equipment that comes with Water Detection plus the water controller. The controller allows you to shut off water remotely if a leak is detected.

Comparing Digital Life to Frontpoint

Digital Life is a breed of its own in that it’s a security system that is backed by a telecom company. The way they approach their packaging is different from any other company we’ve reviewed. I normally try to compare companies that are similar in their approach, but in this case I’ve decided to compare Digital Life to our top recommended home alarm company, Frontpoint Security.

What About Equipment Protection?

AT&T offers an equipment protection program called Complete Protection. Complete Protection offers a lifetime warranty on all equipment, provided you pay for monthly service. There is no additional charge for Complete Protection, but if AT&T dispatches a technician to fix/install parts they do charge $49.99 per visit.

A Summary of Things to Think About

  • AT&T’s experience in the cell phone industry enabled them to create transparent policies. They clearly lay out all twists and turns of their service agreement online.
  • After 14 days you are locked into a standard 24 month contract. If you want out of the contract, they will require 100% balance payment.
  • If you move to an area without service, AT&T will let you out of their contract without the need to pay early termination fees. If you move to an area with AT&T service, they will help you move your service to your new home.
  • AT&T Digital life is only available in certain zip codes.
  • They offer service to residential customers in buildings that are five floors or less. Smoke sensors are not available in apartments/townhomes/duplexes.
  • Their system does require professional installation. In order to make this happen, you must provide them with a 4 hour window when you plan to be home. However, they only require this for new customers. If you purchase additional equipment, you can install on your own.
  • Keep in mind that Digital Life customers do have their own phone support. But if you want to receive support via social media, you will be sharing resources with every AT&T customer and not just Digital Life customers. AT&T does a mediocre job of responding to the multiple complaints they receive online per day.
